"The Race of Your Life" Pt. 2
Click here to download the MP3 file. It's 9.1MB and 40 min. long.
Reference Verses:
1 Cor 9:24
Gal 5:7
Recap of 12/11/05
1. In the race for rewards for faithfulness in our spiritual life and service, we must master our bodies by self-control and self-discipline. Rather than a self-indulgent lifestyle, we must master physical passions and appetites.
2. Paul considered himself not only a herald who summoned others to the race and announced the rules of the race, but as a participant himself in this race.
3. He ran the race as we should with discipline, purposefulness, and dedicated effort so that he who called others to the race wouldn't himself be disqualified for the reward. Disqualification for the reward does not mean loss of salvation (which is not the topic of this passage) but either:
-loss of rewards (1 Corinthians 3:10-15), or
-being removed from the race prematurely (i.e. God's discipline would cut short his life, 1 Corinthians 10:6-10; 11:30-32

Reference Verses:
1 Cor 3:10-15
2 Cor 5:10
1 Cor 9:24
Gal 5:7
2 Tim 4:7-8
Recap of 1 Corinthians 9:24-25
1. Paul often used athletic metaphors of the Christian life. One of his favorites was that of a runner in a race.
2. In 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 Paul encourages Christians to contend for the prize, i.e. rewards for faithfulness in Christian life and service. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10
3. Salvation is not the prize in this context, for all the runners in this race are already believers.
4. To win this prize believers must discipline themselves, even as an athlete does. We must discipline our bodies, minds, emotions to serve God.
5. Unlike the athlete who competes for a crown that will not last, we compete for a crown that will last forever. Four crowns mentioned in Scripture are: the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8 for living in light of Jesus' coming; the crown of rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19) for those active in sharing their faith; the crown of life (James 1:12) for those who patiently endure trials and testings of their faith; and the crown of glory (1 Peter 5:4) for those who lead and feed the flock.

Here's Matt and Chris' rendition of DC Talk's "What If I Stumble," from the 13th.

Sunday Morning Message from November 20th, 2005

Click here for the audio file (.mp3). This week's message is 10.1MB and about 44 minutes long.

Recap of Habakkuk 2:6-20
1. God answers Habakkuk’s complaint (that the Babylonians would be used byGod to discipline God’s people) in two ways:
-in difficult times when God’s ways seem mysterious, the righteous must liveby faith
-the Babylonians would themselves receive God’s judgment and one day God’s glory will fill the whole earth
2. God launches five indictments (woes) against the Babylonians (and allwho live like them). Wiersbe characterizes them as “greed, selfishness, murder, drunkenness and lust, and idolatry.”
3. Each indictment illustrates the “sowing and reaping” principle ofScripture (Proverbs 22:8; Galatians 6:7). Each violation, each failurecarries the seeds of its own destruction. What a person or nation sows theywill also reap.

Sunday Morning Message from November 13th, 2005

Click here to download this week's message, which is 9.9 MB and 43 minutes long. Today's message is from Habakkuk 2:2-5.

Recap of Habakkuk 2:2-5
1. God replies to Habakkuk's second complaint: the Babylonians would be used to discipline God's people yet they themselves would be judged by God.
2. The revelation was to be written down so it could be preserved for the future and be disseminated, since its fulfillment was yet future.
3. Two paths in life are revealed:
-the path of the "puffed up," the path of self-sufficiency, pride, arrogance, which leads to self-destruction and death
-the path of faith, which leads to life, the abundant life of "security, protection, and fullness."

Sunday Morning Message from October 16th, 2005

Click here to download this week's message, which is 10.1 MB and 43 minutes long. Pastor Joe's message is number 7 in his 7 part series on prayer. He wraps up the teaching by focusing on Practical and Effective Prayer.
Matthew 12:22
Mark 3:20-30
Luke 11:14-23

Recap of 10/16/05:
1. We do not seek to “bind” Satan in prayer:
-our concern is not the power of Satan but the “schemes” of Satan (Ephesians 6:10-18)
-our concern should not be the strongholds of Satan but the “footholds” of Satan (Ephesians 4:26,27; 1 Corinthians 7:3,5)
2. A pattern for prayer: the acrostic A-C-T-S (or if you prefer C-A-T-S)
-Adoration, appreciating God for His character, attributes and actions
-Confession, naming specific sins, agreeing with God about them and acknowledging to God our true nature
-Thanksgiving, our response to God’s blessings (family, spouse, job, etc.) and His care over us (including hardships) – 1Thessalonians 5:16-18
-Supplication, prayer for our needs and the needs of others (including all authorities) – 1 Timothy 2:1,2; Ephesians 6:18,19
3. Fear and anxiety are reminders to pray. Philippians 4:6

Sunday Morning Message from October 9th, 2005

Click here to download the mp3 file. This week's is 9.3 MB and 40 minutes.

Recap of 10/9/05:
1. Prayer is not a substitute for action nor should it be an excuse for inaction. (Nehemiah 4:9)
2. We must learn to accept “later,” “no,” and silence as answers to prayer.
3. Prayer is not manipulating God into doing what I want, nor is it demanding of God something I want.
4. Prayer is an essential part of the abiding life of fruitfulness that Jesus talks about in John 15.
5. Since God knows all things, including our needs, why pray?
-biblical prayer is relationship oriented not results-oriented.
-God is our Father and wants us to come to Him with our needs, joys, weaknesses, hurts, etc.
-we don’t pray so that we can instruct God in our needs but so that we can have union with Him

Click here to download the mp3 file. It's 8.2 MB and about 36 minutes long.
This week, Pastor Joe's message is the fifth installment in his series entitled "Prayer 101".
Recap of Luke 11:5-13
The “how-to” of prayer:
1. Luke 11:5-8 - We should be persistent in prayer because, if a human friend will respond out of his reluctance to our need, how much more will God respond Who is never inconvenienced, never bothered, never reluctant and does not need to be persuaded to meet our need.
2. Luke 11:9-10 – God waits for us to “keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking,” not because He is reluctant to hear and answer us, but because He desires fellowship with us. Fellowship with God is a primary aspect of prayer.
3. Luke 11:11-13 – Even as human father respond to their children’s requests with good, not harmful things, so God, our Heavenly Father, gives good things to those who seek Him. He will give us better things than we ask for, because His will is best.

Sorry for the absence!

I've been on vacation, and haven't been able to keep up with the blog for a few weeks. I've got the 11th, 18th and 25th up... so we should be up-to-date.

It appears that our church website is currently down, so I'll get to work on setting that straight.

Also, we started getting a lot of "spam comments" today, so I turned on the word verification feature. Please don't let that discourage you from leaving some feedback for us, or sharing what you think about a particular message.

Thanks for tuning in.

-Mat

Prayer 101 (part 4)

Click here to download the mp3 file. It's 10.5 MB and about 46 minutes long.
This week, Pastor Joe's message is the fourth installment in a series entitled "Prayer 101".

Recap of Matthew 6:12-15
The “how-to” of prayer:
1. After requests related to God’s interests (desire for His name, His kingdom and His will) we then bring requests related to our needs
-for personal, temporal needs (food, clothing, shelter)
-for spiritual needs (need for daily cleansing to maintain temporal fellowship with God)
-for deliverance both from temptation and in temptation.
2. Jesus emphasizes the need to be forgiving people. Dangers in not forgiving:
-it blocks us from receiving God’s forgiveness on a daily basis (blocks our fellowship with Him)
-it build resentment in us which will affect us emotionally or physically
-it may bring God’s discipline into our lives (1 Corinthians 11; Hebrews 12)
-it reflects the standards of the world not the standard of Jesus Christ

Prayer 101 (part 3)

Click here to download the mp3 file. It's 10.0 MB and about 44 minutes long.
This week, Pastor Joe's message is the third installment in a series entitled "Prayer 101".

Recap of Matthew 6:9-11
The “how-to” of prayer:
1. We come to God in prayer on the basis of our relationship with Him, He is our Father.
2. Though He is our Father, He is “in heaven,” i.e. transcendent and sovereign, with unlimited resources.
3. We begin with requests related to God’s interests: desire that He be honored, His kingdom be established and His will prevail.
4. We then bring requests related to our needs: the first request being for our personal, temporal needs.

This week, Pastor Joe's message is the second installment in his series entitled "Prayer 101".

Recap of Matthew 6:5-8
The “how-not-to” of prayer:
1. Prayer out of an insincere attitude:
-to be noticed by others
-for public consumption
-for appearance sake (to appear pious)
2. Prayer with meaningless words:
-mindlessly repeating prescribed prayers
-repeating the same phrases over and over again
-believing the efficacy of prayer was in its length

This week, Pastor Joe's message is entitled "The Essential Responsibility," based on Acts 28:16-31. This is the final sermon in Pastor Joe's series on Acts.

Recap of Acts 28:16-31
1. Paul worked within the limitations of his situation
-he was under house arrest in Rome for two years so his home became his pulpit
-he did not respond with bitterness, discouragement, or recriminations against God
-his teaching reached into the very household of Caesar (Philippians 1:12,13; 4:22)
-there is not limit to what we can accomplish if we will focus on the possibilities in our situations rather than the obstacles.
2. Paul once again emphasized that Christianity was the fulfillment of Judaism not in opposition to it. Jesus Christ was the Messiah who would return one day to reign over Israel and the nations.

Pastor Joe's sermon this week is from
Acts 28:7-15.
Recap of Acts 28:7-15
1. Healing in the New Testament had a:
-revelatory purpose - to reveal Jesus as the Messiah
-accrediting purpose - to authenticate Jesus' claim to be the Son of God
2. The apostles ministry of healing and miracles was to confirm and authenticate their ministries and to identify them with Jesus' ministry and message.
3. The ministry of encouragement is one of the most powerful ministries a believer can exercise.
4. How are we actively and practically encouraging one another in the Body of Christ?

Sunday Morning Message from July 31st, 2005

Click here to download the mp3 file. It's 10.2MB.
Recap of Acts 28:1-6
1. Paul showed he had a servant heart in Acts 28 (and thus the mind of Christ).
2. Why serving is difficult:
-we want to be served
-to serve others elevates other's needs ahead of our own
-the low status of some service
-it interrupts our own pursuits
-feeling used by others
3. What ways can we serve others:
-hospitality
-doing good to others (Proverbs 3:27)
-sharing material goods (1 John 3:17-18)
-supporting the Lord's work (2 Corinthians 8:4; 9:1)
-being a peacemaker (Romans 14:9)
-by personal involvement in other's lives (1 Thessalonians 5:11-15)
-by looking after the needs of widows and orphans (James 1:27)

This week, Pastor Joe's message is based on Acts 27.
Recap of Acts 27:1-20
Lessons in the “storms of life:”
-storms do not always come because of some disobedience (as with Jonah), but God sometimes allows us to go through storms. Paul was not disobedient, nor was he out of God’s will
-storms bring out what is inside, our true character
-in spite of storms God is still in control, furthering His purposes
-storms cannot separate us from the presence of God, in fact it is in storms that we can often more clearly see the presence, power and protection of God
-storms open the door to serve others, particularly non-believers (our journey through life is as much for others as for ourselves)
-storms open the door to witness

This week, Pastor Joe's message is entitled "The Gospel for the Great and Small", based on Acts 25:11-26:32.

Recap of Acts 25:12-27
1. We must not be unduly influenced by wealth, status or position (James 2). The pomp and grandeur of Paul's meeting before King Agrippa was designed to make him feel inferior and intimidate him. It didn't.
2. We must realize who the real VIP's of the world are, and who it is that holds genuine power.
3. We must come to see that the "up and outers" need the gospel as much as the "down and outers."

This week, Pastor Joe resumes his teaching on Acts. His message is based on
Acts 25.

Recap of Acts 25:1-11
When we feel overwhelmed by life's circumstances despite our best efforts to serve the Lord, to pray, to grow and we have a sense that "everything is against us," we must:
-remember the biblical examples of others who felt that way (Abraham, Jacob, Moses)
-look for God in our circumstances- don't discount Him or distrust Him
-keep doing what's right (live responsibly)
-keep growing in our witness, bible study, prayer, and Christian character
-be patient
-recognize that God's way is best - "We may not know what the future holds but we know the One Who holds the future."

This week, Pastor Joe's message is entitled "The Safest Place to Be", based on Acts 22:23-23:11.
Recap of Acts 22:23-23:11
1. We often feel that we are at the mercy of the people, circumstances, and institutions in our lives, but as believers we need to grasp that we are in God’s hands ultimately, not theirs. God is in control of our lives and comes in our hour of need.
2. As He did at other decisive points in Paul’s life, the Lord encourages him to “Take courage!”
3. Several times in Jesus’ ministry He encouraged those in need (physical need, emotional need, spiritual need) by telling them to “Take courage!”
4. We can live without fear and with courage by remembering God is in control of our lives and that we are promised Jesus’ presence in our lives

Sunday Morning Message from May 15th, 2005

Click here to download the mp3 file. It's 9.4 MB and about 40 minutes long.
This week, Pastor Joe's message is based on Acts 22:6-22.
Recap of Acts 22:6-22
1. Only an encounter with the risen Christ could account for such the stark change that occurred in Paul’s life. Once a persecutor of the church, he was now one of its chief spokesmen.
2. When Christ comes into a person’s life, by faith, their direction in life is changed for time and eternity. They have gone from spiritual death to eternal life, from hopelessness to real purpose.
3. There are three crucial decisions that every young person must make (credit to Howard Hendricks) in this order:
-Master (who will be master of their lives)
-Mission (what will be their life’s purpose, what will they give themselves to)
-Mate (who will share their life)

Sunday Morning Message from May 8th, 2005

Pastor Joe's message today is entitled, "Ready to Give an Answer" (part 2). The file is 8Mb, and 34 minutes long.
Recap of Acts 22:1-5
1. Paul readily makes a defense both of the gospel and of his ministry. Believers are instructed by Peter in 1 Peter 3:15 to ready to give an answer (a defense) for the reason for their hope.
2. Paul’s defense, a testimony, has three parts: before conversion (vv. 1-5) how he was converted (vv. 6-16), his post-conversion experience and commission from God (vv. 17-21).
3. Paul sought for common ground with his listeners, a good principle for evangelism. Some areas of common ground we may have with the unbelievers around us are: religious experience, ethnicity, marriage & family, former lifestyle

Sunday Morning Message from May 1st, 2005

Due to technical complexities (Mat messed up the machine!), we didn't get a digital recording of May 1st's sermon. Sorry about that. Here's an .mp3 of the taped version for archival purposes.

Recap of Acts 21:37-40
1. Luke makes the point that Paul is no revolutionary in the ordinary sense of the word. He emphasizes the non-political nature of Christianity. The power of the gospel is the Word of God, not political power.
2. When Paul could have taken safety, instead he chose to address a hostile crowd. What could motivate him to do this:
-he was “Christ-possessed”
-the central issue of his life was sharing Christ
-he knew that God could save the “best” of men (those righteous in their own eyes)
-he knew that God could save the worst of men (those whose need was evident)
-he knew that without Christ only eternal torment awaited all people.

"When the Crowd is Wrong." Pastor Joe's text this morning is Acts 21:1-14.
This week's file is 10.7 MB and about 47 minutes long.
Recap of Acts 21:1-14
1. The organizing principle of a Christian's life must be the glory of God.
2. To live for the glory of God is not to be shielded from difficult circumstances and pain but to glorify God through them.
3. God revealed what would happen to Paul to both test his resolve and prepare him for what was coming.
4. We must identify with God's will in other believer's lives not our sympathies with what they are going through. We must pray for them and support them accordingly.
5. "Ultimately, our decisions must be guided by the Holy Spirit, not the emotions and opinions of other people." (Richards)

Sunday Morning Message from March 27th, 2005

This week, Pastor Joe takes a rest from the Acts study to examine Luke's account of the resurrection of the Messiah. Is there any real evidence out there? Why not click here to take a listen? This week's mp3 file is 44 minutes, and about 11 MB.

Recap of Luke 24:36-53
1. Jesus had to convince His disciples that He had been resurrected by the following proofs:
-He had a tangible, physical body
-He showed them His wounds (marks of the crucifixion)
-He ate food
2. The nature of the resurrection body:
-it was not a resuscitated body destined to die again (as Lazarus, others)
-it was not a reincarnated body (Hebrews 9:27)
-it was a resurrected body (still physical but "transformed and empowered")
3. The resurrection validates the uniqueness of Christ. The empty tomb makes Him unlike any other teacher or religious leader. Because of the resurrection Jesus can be known today.

Click here to listen to Pastor Joe's Sermon, entitled "Lessons for Leaders". This week it's about 14.4 MB (1 hour and 3 minutes).

Recap of Acts 20:13-21
Paul's model of ministry- ministry should be characterized by:
-transparency and consistency (vs. 18)
-humility (vs. 19) - true humility is not thinking too lowly of ourselves or too highly of ourselves, it is freedom from thinking of ourselves at all which leads to true freedom to minister to others.
-tenderness, compassion, sorrow (vs. 19)
-boldness in preaching/teaching (vv. 20-21) - we must never shrink back from the truth of the Word in fear of others or in pandering to others.

Come Thou Fount (performed by Lawrence & Andy)

Click here to download (or listen) to our Offertory from this past Sunday. Lawrence (Guitar & Vocals) and Andy (Drum & Vocals) did an excellent job, but tech problems affected the recording. Sorry Andy! You pretty much only hear Lawrence and his guitar. Trust me -- it was much better live.
1. Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of thy redeeming love.

2. Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

3. O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Sunday Morning Message from March 13th, 2005

Click here to listen to Pastor Joe's Sermon, entitled "Encouraged in Life and Death". This week it's about 12 MB (53 minutes).

Recap of Acts 20:1-12
1. Paul's ministry of encouraging the believers with many words entailed:
-reinforcing the importance of sound doctrine
-enabling them to answer false, heretical doctrine
-exhorting them to remain true to the true faith
-encouraging them in the face of persecution, difficult circumstances, etc.
2. The early church: met on Sunday; ate together and partook of the Lord's Supper; met at night; met in homes; and "the length of the meeting was not regulated by the clock" (Richards).
3. Church meetings brought comfort and encouragement because they were a reminder that:
-in the midst of death there is life
-in the midst of darkness there is light

Sunday Morning Message from March 6th, 2005

Here's our first audio post. Click here to download the .mp3 file. Caution: huge filesize! It's 22MB (48 minute message encoded at 64kbs). We're considering posting a second file at a lower bitrate to make it more accessible to those with dial up connections. Please leave a "comment" (click on comments below) if that would be helpful for you. Since we're very new at this, please leave us a comment (or email) if you're able to download it and listen to the message ... it would be much appreciated.
Joe's text from Sunday was Acts 19:21-41. Here's the recap:
1. Paul's desire to reach Rome, and beyond, sets the tone for the last third of the book of Acts. The rest of the book chronicles his path to Rome.
2. So many lives were changed by the gospel that the artisans who profited from the false worship of Artemis of the Ephesians were affected financially. They responded by causing a riot.
3. Paul and the believers did not organize a boycott or a petition against the immoral worship of Artemis, they did not have to. Preaching the gospel and nurturing believers in the faith turned the tide without pressure tactics.
4. The Evangelical church today has abandoned the power of the gospel for the power of economic and political clout.

The New Sermon Log for DRBC

Hello Everyone!

Welcome to our Church's new ministry. We have been inspired by the development of new technology and trends that are making it easier to share the teaching we are blessed to experience each week at DRBC. Our goal is to post an audio file (.mp3 format) on this weblog each week, containing the message from that past Sunday's service. Our hope is that we are furthering our ability to answer our calling to go forth and make disciples through this service. Please enjoy listening to the ministry of God's word on your mp3 player while commuting to work, or just spending time at home listening on your computer.

These recordings are intended for everyone, including regular attenders who can't make the service on a particular Sunday, or someone who's never heard of DRBC before, and wants to hear what our pastor talks about on Sunday.

Please learn more about our church by checking out our homepage at http://drbc.delriolive.com

While you're there, please send along any suggestions for improvement to our webmaster. We're also interested in linking to other ministries' messages to "share the wealth," so please pass along any good ones you're familiar with.

Finally, please join us in praying that God will guide our Church, its leaders, teachers, and congregation members, and use His Good News (including this digital version) to bring many into His Kingdom.

II Timothy 3:16 !!!
